Twin Pine Casino in Napa County broke ground last week on a $37 million expansion that will include nearly 300 new slot machines, four new table games, a new poker room and a 60-room hotel.
The casino, owned and operated by the Middletown Rancheria band of Pomo Indians, also will include shops and a wine-tasting room, and is expected to open by 2010.
The expansion will be bankrolled in part by the Mohegan Tribe and Dougherty Funding LLC in Minneapolis. The Mohegan Tribe runs the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Conn., the world's largest casino. Since 1996, the tribe has bankrolled a number of smaller ventures elsewhere in the United States.
Jose Simon III, tribal chairman of the Middletown Rancheria band, said the Twin Pine expansion is long overdue.
'Our tribe opened Twin Pine Casino in November 1994 in a temporary building, and it has always been the goal of our tribe to open a permanent destination resort hotel and casino in our area,' he said. 'It has always been a priority of this tribal council to enhance and protect the economic development for our people.'
According to Simon, the site now has 12,000 square feet of gaming space, with 438 slot machines and eight table games. After the expansion, the gaming floor will be more than 50,000 square feet and will encompass 700 slot machines, 12 table games and 10 poker tables in a new poker room.
The casino's remote location could be a disadvantage. Middletown is halfway between Calistoga and Clearlake (Lake County). The fastest way to get there from Napa is to drive an hour north on Highway 29.
Still, Middletown Rancheria elders are banking on the development of Clear Lake and Lake County. Simon said he views the casino's remote location as a positive.
'Having the largest natural lake in California in close proximity to our location will benefit us,' he said.
Twin Pine is the second Wine Country casino to announce expansion plans this year. In August, River Rock Casino in Geyserville (Sonoma County) revealed plans for the construction of a new $300 million, 600,000-square-foot casino and a 260-room, Tuscan-style hotel.
The casinos are owned and operated by different bands of the Pomo Indians, Twin Pine by Middletown Rancheria and River Rock by the Dry Creek Rancheria.
Jerry Navarro, poker room supervisor at River Rock, said he's not at all worried about the new and improved Twin Pine Casino stealing his customers.
'Just because you build it doesn't mean they'll come,' Navarro said. 'If you ask me, I'd say there are more than enough gamblers to go around.'
